On May 20, 2013, an EF5 tornado with peak winds estimated at 210 mph struck the town of Moore in Oklahoma, killing 25 and injuring 377 others. The total may have could have been higher if the patrons at the AMF Bowling Center in Moore had not been told to leave the building due to early warning by NOAA Weather Radio.
One of the best early warning devices you can have is a NOAA Weather Radio. These units come in a wide variety of styles and models to fit your needs and can be outfitted with special warning devices for the sight and hearing impaired. There are even models that operate in an area that does not have power by turning a hand crank to power the unit. This is great for power outages and camping trips.
The warning system in these units can be customized by the owner to deliver personal preferences by type of warning received and the area receiving it so it does not become a nuisance due to the amount of radio traffic.
Please include a NOAA Weather Radio in your household and in your disaster preparedness kit.
